FeNO test (nitric oxide testing)

A Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) test, is a type of lung function test that measures how much nitric oxide is in the breath. This is often used for patients with allergic or eosinophilic asthma, allergic rhinitis, and other atopic disorders.

A FeNO test is quick and non-invasive. You’ll be required to breathe into a mouthpiece or tube attached to a monitor. A FeNO test measures the amount of nitric oxide in the breath and can indicate if your airways are inflamed. It allows us to correctly diagnose patients with asthma and ensure that prescribed treatments are effectively alleviating the endobronchial inflammation. In other words, this test confirms the patients are on the correct treatment.

FeNO testing is usually carried out alongside other lung function tests, in order to get a full picture of a patient’s health and/or condition. This allows our respiratory physician to make an accurate diagnosis and provide the most appropriate treatment.
